Bishop Okoye Spiritan Secondary School, BOSSS, has constructed and installed a Phase A overhead warm water tank in the girl's hostel. It was designed by Rev. Fr. Chinedu Aneke, C.S.Sp., the Director of Maintenance. This is to address the issue of a shortage of bathing warm water during peak hours of the day caused by the failure of the existing solar-powered water heater and the distributed water heaters in the school.
Fr. Chinedu described the overhead warm water tank, stating that its capacity is 500 gallons, which is more than enough for the girls' students' needs. He also stated that the tank has a temperature-regulating mechanism to control the water's temperature. And, by design, there will always be warm water available at all times of the day.
He expressed his delight at the project's progress thus far and promised that the phase B overhead warm water tank for the boys’ hostel would be installed during the mid-term break.
One of the hostel mistresses, Miss Chidinma Jeremiah, expressed her delight at the installation of the warm water tank. She called the warm water tank a lifesaver since the girls can now take their baths on time without having to wait or line up for rationed warm water.
In response to the warm water tank installation, the head girl, Egbuziem Chidumebi, told the BOSSS media that female students now had adequate warm water to bathe with even during peak hours. She also stated that the warm water tank has aided in lowering the crisis rate for asthmatic students.
In a similar vein, BOSSS installed a solar-powered automated school bell. In a general staff meeting, the principal, Rev. Fr. Jude Ekemgba, C.S.Sp, stated that the automated bell will help students wake up on time and prepare for their daily activities, as well as prompt them to say hourly prayers. He also stated that the automated bell will help students develop the habit of good time management, which is essential for their academic pursuits.
In response to the new trend, Rev. Fr. Vincent Ibeh, C.S.Sp., Vice Principal II, told the BOSSS media that the students are now waking up earlier since the automated bell now serves as their wake-up alarm. He further stated that the automated bell has eliminated excuses for being late to mass or other school activities.
The solar-powered, automated school bell will function throughout the day. It is programmed to remind students of their daily activities, to recite the school anthem, to play soft music in the early morning hours, and to utter hourly prayers.
In another development, BOSSS plans to use the mid-term break to replace all iron beds in school hostels with more aesthetically pleasing platform beds. This will eliminate the difficulties that some students have climbing up the double-decked iron bed, as well as the risk of rolling over and falling down while sleeping. The new platform beds for each student have already been purchased and will be installed before they return from midterm break.
BOSSS is responsible for ensuring that her students have access to facilities and services that would help them attain academic excellence. All the students need to do is put it to use and become the best they can be.
